Good delivery requires more than a good spoken presentation. Effective delivery also includes nonverbal delivery which complements the verbal delivery. And there are six nonverbal characteristics that make a speech more interesting:
1. Posture and stance
How you stand will help with your vocal delivery as well as provide you with a solid footing to move without being awkward.
2. Movement
Movement can indicate transition points in a speech and can help you get closer to the audience.
3. Gestures
Gestures can provide emphasis and description.
4. Eye Contact
Eye contact help your listeners feel that you are speaking to them, and it allows you to watch audience members for valuable feedback.
5. Facial expressions
Facial expressions complement your vocal delivery and add life to your speech.
6. Appearance
Our appearance can indicate that we are serious about speaking; we shouldn't distract attention from what we are saying to what we are wearing.
In addition to the nonverbal delivery we create with our body, we can use the visual channel by including visual aids in our speech. Several visual aids are commonly used in speeches:
(1) Chalkboard
(2) Posters
a. With charts or graphs
b. With words or phrases
